Oregon's tribal gaming history started in Canyonville

Oregon Native American tribes were slow to act when the federal government began allowing casinos on tribal lands almost 30 years ago, but the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians fearlessly took the first step. The government passed a law in 1988 allowing tribes to offer state-sanctioned gambling on their reservations. But most of Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes were reluctant at first.
