Outcry prompts withdrawal of Native American artifacts from Medford library auction

Medford officials have canceled plans to auction off a collection of Native American artifacts owned by the city’s public library after the Boston Herald ran a story questioning the sale’s legality. In a statement the day the story ran, Mayor Stephanie M. Burke said she immediately withdrew the artifacts from the Dec. 1 auction because of concerns cited by Native American groups that the sale might violate the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
