Three Forks History: Getting Married Was a Challenge in Indian Territory

As the Five Tribes began to embrace education and Christianity in the early 1800s, they also began to develop laws regarding marriage. While still residing in the southeastern states, the tribes established formal governments and passed legislation. The long-standing practice of bigamy was ended and couples were required to be married legally by a minister of the gospel or other authorized person. A license was required from the national government.
