Tribal Leaders, Policy Makers, Industry Professionals Gather for Western Indian Gaming Conference

Hundreds of tribal leaders, regulators, industry professionals and policy makers are gathering at the 23rd annual Western Indian Gaming Conference at Harrah’s Resort Southern California this week for a series of speeches, workshops as well as a state-of-the-art tradeshow where industry leaders and innovators show off the latest wares.

Three of the leading candidates for governor, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa and former Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin have confirmed participation in the WIGC gubernatorial candidate forum on Thursday February 8.

During the opening session today, San Bernardino County Supervisor James Ramos announced that he was running for California’s 40th Assembly District, seeking to be the first California Indian to serve in the state Legislature.

The WIGC and trade show has proven to be one of the most informative conferences in Indian Country and upon the opening of the conference features the annual State of the Tribal Nations speech, delivered by the chairman of the 34-tribal member California Nations Indian Gaming Association, the largest tribal coalition in the state and WIGC organizers.

This year, CNIGA chairman Steve Stallings delivered the address and reported that tribes are emerging from the recession and overall tribal gaming enterprises are generating $7.8 billion is economic output and have added $5 billion in value to the California economy according to the most recent figures.

Chairman Stallings also touted the employment figures created by tribal governments both in the gaming and in non-gaming sectors.

“Altogether, tribal gaming and non-gaming operations provide over 85,000 jobs statewide, 63,000 of which are from gaming and include 51,000 direct hires,” said Chairman Stallings. “To place it in perspective, that means tribal enterprises employ a greater number of workers in California than in the pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing industry.”

The WIGC is taking place today through Thursday, February 8, this year and is held every year in early February.
