SYMPOSIUM FOCUS
Legal gambling in America now exists in 47 of the 50 states. Gaming is
one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Indeed, with the
advent of Internet
technology, gambling has become ubiquitous. More than $600 billion a
year is wagered in America with more than $50 billion in yearly revenue.
The extraordinary
growth in gaming in the past two decades has presented courts and
legislatures nationwide with novel legal issues. Moreover,
practitioners in nearly every area of
law are now dealing with gaming related issues. However, very little
legal scholarship has been devoted to this important area of law.
Chapman Law Review recognizes that the lack of scholarly material
devoted to gaming law presents an important opportunity to further its
commitment to legal
excellence and scholarship. Therefore, the Chapman Law Review has chosen
to focus its yearly Symposium on gaming law.
The Gaming Law Symposium, "Gambling Law in the 21st Century"
is scheduled for February 1, 2002, at Chapman University School of Law
in Orange, California. Chapman Law Review has assembled a group of the
most prominent legal authorities in the field to participate in the
symposium and publish
articles in the Review.
Our goal with the Symposium and Gaming Law Volume of the Review is to
create a body of scholarly legal authority that will provide a valuable
resource for elected officials, judges, scholars, lawyers and other
decision makers. The Symposium and Gaming Law Volume of the Review
will encompass all the major issues in gaming law, which include: the
collection of gambling debts, Internet gaming, Indian gambling,
licensing and regulation, sports betting, casino law, and others.
At the Law Review, we are very excited that, in addition to covering all
of the major issues in gaming, the Gaming Law Volume will include
articles from the nations top gaming law experts. Without doubt, the
product of this extraordinary gathering of scholars will be very
influential in the future of gaming law.
Moreover, we expect that the Gaming Law Volume of the Review will bring
about a significant increase in legal scholarship devoted to gaming.
This increase in
scholarship will provide courts and legislatures with the resources to
make informed decisions and help to ensure legal stability for the
gaming industry. Indeed, we
anticipate the Gaming Law Symposium will become the launching pad for
new legal precedent in some or many areas of gaming law.
Chapman University has emerged as an institution committed to excellence
and destined to achieve a position of distinction and influence in
American legal education. Chapman Law Review is committed to stimulating
intellectual inquiry. This will be exemplified not only in the Law
Review publication but also at
our 4th Annual Law Review Symposium. Chapman Law Review's goal is not
only to attract the scholarly authors but also to provide an environment
of educational
leadership that is exemplary of what higher education can be. The
symposium is a reflection of the core of the Law Review's publication.
The finished product is
subsequently sent not only to the managing partners of local law firms
but also to every ABA law school in the nation and many law libraries
nationwide.
